"Some people have lives; some people have music."- John Green, Will Grayson
If there is one thing that can be said about composer/guitarist Jacob Deaton is that music has defined his existence. Jacob became interested in music as a very young boy. He gravitated towards his great uncle Albert who was a touring and recording musician for numerous artists including Brenda Lee.
"Apparently my family tells me when Uncle Albert was in the room that's who I wanted to hang out with. I guess it was sort of a passing of the musical torch in the family since he was the only one I knew that was a professional musician."
Jacob began singing in choir through middle and high school that led him to perform in Indiana's All State Honors Choir as well as in the solo and ensemble competitions. At this point, Jacob began asking his parents for musical instruments…which was initially a denied request. At the end of his senior year he finally was allowed to purchase an acoustic guitar.
Just a few short months later after finishing high school Jacob joined the United States Air Force…putting a hold on his musical developments and focusing on Airfield Management. Three years into his service time, casually picking a note when his job allowed, he decided to get serious.
"I specifically remember a day in my apartment where I had a guitar in my hand…and I wondered if there was a career in music for me. I realized at that moment I could never be satisfied with my life if I didn't try."
This career change landed Jacob in Atlanta Georgia where he attended the Atlanta Institute of Music. Upon graduating in 2006 Jacob has become an in demand guitarist in the Atlanta area in various styles of music. He has performed on stage with Pee Wee Ellis, Derek Trucks, Joe Lavano, Tony Monaco, Nigel Hall, Russell Gunn and many more.
But he's not done yet…
"The future for me is all about growth and improving upon my weaknesses and making them what I'm best at. Becoming a better musician and figuring out a way to serve others in the process is what I'm most passionate about."
